Cornwall Community Mourns 16-Year-Old Laila After Tragic Crane Incident
CORNWALL, Ont. — The Cornwall community is grieving the heartbreaking loss of 16-year-old Laila, whose death on Monday, August 10, brought a lengthy emergency response to a construction site near Montreal Road and Belmont Street.
Laila, the beloved daughter of Melissa Menzies, was pronounced dead at the scene following an hours-long response involving police officers, firefighters, crisis negotiators, and specialized rescue personnel.
Cornwall Police Service officers responded early Monday morning to reports of a person in distress on a construction crane at a site located at 910 Montreal Road. Authorities quickly established a perimeter around the area, closed nearby roads and asked residents and motorists to avoid the intersection while emergency crews worked to resolve the situation.
The response continued for several hours.
Members of the Cornwall Emergency Response Team, crisis negotiators, Cornwall Fire Services, Ottawa Fire Services and the Ontario Provincial Police Tactics and Rescue Unit were among those involved. Specialized personnel with experience in high-rise rescue operations also attended the scene.
Emergency responders worked throughout the day in an effort to safely resolve the situation. While crews operated from the construction site below, crisis negotiators continued attempts to communicate with the individual.
Police also urged members of the public to respect the seriousness of the situation by not sharing photographs or videos from the scene. Residents were warned against operating drones in the area, as they could interfere with emergency operations and the investigation.
Shortly before 3 p.m., Cornwall Police confirmed the devastating outcome.
Despite the extensive efforts of emergency responders, Laila was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Deputy Chief Chad Maxwell acknowledged the profound impact of the tragedy and appealed to the community to respect the privacy of those affected.
The province’s Special Investigations Unit has invoked its mandate and is investigating the circumstances surrounding the death. Authorities have not released additional details.
Cornwall Mayor Justin Towndale also expressed condolences to Laila’s family and friends, while encouraging residents to look after one another and reach out for support during a difficult time.
